Despite choosing to remain in the Union during the
Civil War, a majority of white Delawareans opposed the abolition of slavery and any
notions of racial equality. Thus, the Delaware legislature voted against the 13th,
14th, and 15th amendments that ended slavery, ensured racial equality under the law, and
guaranteed the right to vote to all African Americans. Despite Delaware's
reluctance, all three amendments became the law of the land. |
