First Delaware Volunteer Infantry

The First Delaware Volunteer Infantry was organized in Wilmington in May 1861 for a three-month enlistment. During these three months the regiment guarded bridges along the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore railroad.  Until the close of the war, the First participated in all of the major engagements of the Army of the Potomac, including Antietum, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness campaign, Spottsylvania, and the siege of Petersburg. The First was also present during the surrender of General Lee’s army at Appomattox Courthouse. The First mustered out on July 12, 1865.
