Slavery existed in Delaware almost from
the beginnings of European settlement. In the following century thousands of Africans were
brought to Delaware to work in the fields and homes of white Delawareans. Abolitionists
and conductors on the Underground Railroad challenged the views of slaveholders and
assisted in gaining the freedom of many slaves. |
