The first African slave, Anthony, arrived at Fort Christina
in April of 1639 aboard the Vogel Grip. Anthony had been purchased in the West
Indies. Very little is know about Anthony other than that he served New Sweden’s
governor, Johan Prinz, cutting hay for his cattle. |
